David expresses his confidence in the LORD (1). David is speaking of and to the LORD, Yahweh or Jehovah. This is God’s covenant name for Himself. Jesus identified Himself as the Jehovah of the Old Testament, John 8:58. This is the first time that light is used directly as a metaphor for God. In salvation we are called out of spiritual darkness into the light of salvation. Divine light is poured into our souls by the Holy Spirit, 2 Corinthians 4:6. The LORD is also David’s stronghold in the midst of trouble (1). The word “strength” means a fortified place or a defense. This is a familiar military image used by David, Psalm 18:2. Jesus is the Christian’s stronghold.
