The Importance of Unity
One of the most important qualities that should be characteristic of a local church is unity. A survey of the New Testament reveals the value that God places on unity among His people. Hebrews 12:14-15, “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness…” 1 Thessalonians 5:13, “Be at peace among yourselves.” 2 Corinthians 13:11, “…be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.” Paul here in Ephesians is referring to “the unity of the Spirit.” This is spiritual unity created by the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. An individual believer cannot create unity. A local assembly of Christians cannot create unity. We can create disunity, 1 Corinthians 3:3-4.
